Production in the Ebro Delta
Rice is sown in around 22,000 Ha in the Ebro Delta. The process begins with the flooding of the rice fields halfway through April, in order to sow the seed at the end of the month. The rice harvest begins midway through September and lasts for approximately 4 or 5 weeks.
Around 120 million kg of paddy rice are harvested. This is processed in the milling plants and is converted into around 70 million kg of round rice, fit for consumption.
The Ebro Delta's production accounts for 98.5% of all the rice produced in Catalonia, and 20% of that produced in Spain. The main varieties produced in the Ebro Delta are Bahía, Senia and Tebre, which are all semi-long grain rices, characterised by their great capacity for absorption (allowing them to take on the flavours of other ingredients).
